Effects of remifentanil on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane in dogs

Abstract: Remifentanil decreased ISO(MAC) in a dose-related fashion; the reduction in ISO(MAC) was stable over the course of a prolonged CRI (6 hours). A dose of 0.30 microg of remifentanil/kg/min resulted in nearly maximal isoflurane-sparing effect in dogs; a ceiling effect was observed at higher infusion rates.

“…The findings of this study are consistent with those of Monteiro et al (2010), who obtained reductions of isoflurane requirement of 59% and 43% with the same doses of remifentanil as those used in this study (0.3 and 0.15 µg kg -1 min -1, respectively). However, Monteiro´s study used electrical stimulus.…”

“…For protocols of balanced anesthesia, opioid analgesic infusions are commonly used in combination with inhalation anesthetics, as opioid analgesic infusions reduce the MAC of inhalation anesthetics (STEAGALL et al, 2006;MONTEIRO et al, 2010) and reduce the rate of infusion of intravenous anesthetics (CARARETO et al, 2004). Remifentanil has a pharmacokinetic profile that is ideal for continuous infusion with rapid onset of action and elimination, and its elimination is independent of hepatic and renal function (HOKE et al, 1997;EGAN, 2000).…”

“…Central nervous system depression manifesting as sedation was seen following methadone administration in conscious cats and may have contributed to the MAC reduction observed in this study. Opioid administration has been associated with MAC reduction in cats Ferreira et al 2009), although the magnitude of MAC reduction in this species is small when compared to dogs, rats and human beings (Hall et al 1987;Lang et al 1996;Criado & Segura 2003;Monteiro et al 2010), which are all species that demonstrate sedation with the use of opioids. For example, in a prior report, dogs receiving 0.5 mg kg )1 of methadone IV had a 35 and 15% reduction in isoflurane MAC at 2.5 and 5 hours following drug administration (Credie et al 2010).…”
