Effects of repeated asenapine in a battery of tests for anxiety-like behaviours in mice

Abstract: The results suggest that asenapine may have anxiolytic-like properties and recommends that clinical trials examining such effects should be performed.

“…Marble burying (MB), however, has been criticized on both conceptual and empirical grounds for its ability to serve as a unique benchmark of OCD (Albelda andJoel 2012, Wolmarans de et al 2016). Indeed, MB has also appeared in the literature as a measure for autism, motivation or general anxiety disorder (GAD) (Ene et al 2016, Jury et al 2015, Silverman et al 2015. Despite the criticisms, MB continues to appear regularly in the literature as a measure of compulsion (Gawali et al 2016, Kudryashov et al 2016, Nichols et al 2016, Satta et al 2016.…”

“…Yet, the current results of the behavior in the EPM are even more counterintuitive because the effects of short photoperiod on females suggest an anxiolytic-like effect (see Figures 1D and 1E). Activity level can greatly vary the response in tests such as the EPM, which is considered as a measure of exploratory behavior [60,61] [62]. The results show that female spiny mice maintained in short photoperiods appeared to be more active in the EPM compared with the neutral photoperiod controls and it is possible that the increased activity might have…”

It would have been interesting to also examine both males and females in tests for anxiety-like behavior that are not based on exploration such as the novelty suppressed feeding test or the marble burying test [61] but these tests were not used in the study.…”
