“…Maximum groundwater nitrate concentrations were consistently measured in between Tarsus and Karaduvar regions in 2020 (Table 3). Intensive irrigation in agriculture, rapid urbanization and the terrestrial inputs from the domestic wastewater and industrial discharges have led to nitrate pollution in surface waters and groundwater in Mersin Province (Özbay et al, 2012;Akçay et al, 2022;Akçay, 2023;Akçay et al, 2023;Erşahin & Bilgili, 2023;Türkeri et al, 2023). Study findings indicated that highest concentrations were consistently measured in the regions where human-induced pressures are very intense (Güler et al, 2012;Erşahin & Bilgili, 2023).…”

“…The study findings with the previously reported riverine nutrients data showed that nutrient concentrations and fluxes of the Seyhan and Ceyhan Rivers were greater than recorded in the other regional rivers flowing into the NE Mediterranean coastal region as these rivers pass through highly populated urban areas hosting local industrial and domestic wastewater treatment facilities that discharge to these rivers (Kılıç et al 2018). Higher concentrations of nutrients carried by the regional rivers have led to development of coastal eutrophication in the NE Mediterranean coastal waters (Tugrul et al 2019, Akcay et al 2022) (Figure 2). The calculated molar ratios from total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) fluxes ranged from 13 in the Göksu River to 22 in the Berdan River (Table 2).…”

“…However, the behavior of OM in estuaries and coastal bays is complicated due to the OM is supplied from multiple sources, including terrestrial plant detritus, soils, in-situ aquatic production and exogenous offshore marine environments sources (Ke et al, 2020;Samantaray and Sanyal, 2022;Akcay et al, 2022). Moreover, due to the complex hydrological conditions in the estuaries and bays, the OM dynamics in estuaries and bays are subject to high spatial and temporal variability (Liu et al, 2020a;Chen et al, 2021).…”
