Effects of riverbed incision on the hydrology of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

Abstract: The hydrogeomorphology of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) has been significantly altered by natural and anthropogenic drivers. In this study, the spatiotemporal changes of the flow regime were examined by analysing the long-term daily, monthly, annual and extreme discharges and water levels from 1980 to 2018, supported by further investigation of the long-term annual sediment load (from the 1960s to 2015), river bathymetric data (in 1998, 2014 and 2017) and daily salinity concentration (from the 1990s to 201… Show more

“…Binh, Kantoush, et al. (2021) revealed a clockwise hysteresis relation between the discharge and water level in the VMD, suggesting that RCs for rising and falling limbs should be developed differently. In the VMD, the flow characteristics in the rising and falling limbs are completely different: the former is controlled by riverine flood waves from upstream and the latter is strongly influenced by tides.…”

“…These RCs were separately established based on both year‐round data and data for the rising and falling limbs, following the work of Binh, Kantoush, et al. (2021). One of the purposes of this approach was to understand the advantages of nonlinear models with ML versus linear regression models based on RCs.…”

“…Therefore, the decreased floodpulse at Chaktomuk and Neak Luong is likely to propagate further downstream to the VMD. Also, a smaller floodpulse will bring fewer sediments to the VMD (Binh et al, 2021). As a result, current problems of land subsidence and seawater intrusion there may become more severe in the future (Binh et al, 2020a;Kantoush et al, 2017;Zoccarato et al, 2018).…”
