Effects of sewage-derived nutrients on an estuarine macrobenthic community

Abstract: Eutrophication is one of the foremost threats to coastal ecosystems today. Enhanced sewage treatment has often been implemented as a means of counteracting eutrophication by reducing point source inputs of nutrients to estuaries. A 23 yr record (1972 to 1994) of macrobenthic communities in Himmerfjärden bay, Sweden, a coastal embayment of the Baltic proper, was evaluated in relation to nutrient discharges and physicochemical parameters. The study period started before the onset of sewage discharge and covers t… Show more

“…The temporal and spatial trends and patterns seen in these data are consistent with trends and patterns reported elsewhere (Savage et al, 2002). For example, over the period leading up to the introduction of the restoration plan, the assemblage in the area least affected by eutrophication, the seagrass bed, increased in biomass, coupled with an increase in opportunistic taxa, such as small deposit feeding polychaetes (mainly Alkmaria romijni and Capitella capitata) (see Cardoso et al, 2007 for more detail).…”

“…efflux. This value is significantly lower than the external sources of N from the catchment area (runoff, input from the upper lake Mälaren, and STP) that were estimated to be approximately 850 t year -1 (Savage et al 2002). By contrast, the calculated internal loading of P (132 t year -1 ) was almost three times higher than the external loading of 45 t P year -1 reported by Savage et al (2002).…”

“…The N/P ratios of additional external N sources for Himmerfjärden are insufficient to reach a Redfield N/P ratio of 16 (Savage et al 2002). Since the DIN effluxes reported here are in the range of values from previous studies of Baltic sediments (Tuominen et al 1999), we attribute the low N/P ratios to the high PO 4 3-effluxes.…”

“…In the Baltic Sea, eutrophication has for example led to oxygen deficiency with devastating effects on the benthic macrofauna in many coastal areas and larger basins (Schaffner et al 1992;Bonsdorff et al 2002;Karlson et al 2002;Savage et al 2002;Kotta et al 2007). Rosenberg and Diaz (1993) classified the benthic habitat in the inner Stockholm archipelago, on the coast of northwestern Baltic Proper, in 1991 by taking sedimentsurface and sediment-profile images.…”
