Effects of shade nettings, sowing time and storage on baby spinach flavonoids

Abstract: Flavonoids are important in plant interactions with the environment and may have positive effects on human health. Effects of light quality and quantity on flavonoid concentration were studied in baby spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) cultivated under three types of shade netting differing in transmittance of UV-B and PAR, at two times during the season. Leaves harvested at two growth stages for each sowing were subjected to different post-harvest storage conditions. Shade nettings had a relatively small effect o… Show more

“…Carotenoids may also scavenge any singlet oxygen that forms during photosynthesis (Bergquist, 2006). The excess radiation generates reactive oxygen species that may cause photo inhibition if not scavenged, for example, by carotenoids (Bergquist et al, 2007). A strong and negative relation was noted between the intensity of shading and the relative chlorophyll content of leaves.…”

“…Flavonoids are the important secondary metabolites of plant and extensive bioactivities for medicine [1], and would be influenced by kinds of factors, such as harvesting times, ecology factors [24], shade nettings and sowing time [5], development [6], light transmittance paper bags [7]. Besides, sample pretreatment was the key process leading to alterations in the quantity and quality of bioactive compounds [810].…”

“…UV-A lead to an increase in the accumulation of flavonoids in the study [98]. The level of flavonoid in baby spinach sown in August was not affected by shading, while that sown in April was affected by shading; with an increase in flavonoid accumulation in un-shaded leaves [71]. This might be due to the fact that increasing levels of UV-B radiation leads to accumulation of flavonoids.…”
