Effects of signal power control strategies and wavelength assignment algorithms on circuit OSNR in WDM networks

Abstract: Software-defined networking is enabling wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks to be programmable down to individual components. While taking into account typical gain and noise figure profiles of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) components, the authors consider a number of signal power control strategies and compare their performance in terms of achievable lightpath optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). These strategies are applied network-wide to concurrently control the gain of each individual am… Show more

“…These commands contain the attenuation of the assigned wavelength, based on the signal power level computed by the CM. These signal power levels can be chosen to optimize the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) [34] for setup requests or block the assigned wavelength for tear down requests. Upon completion of all these setup (tear down) commands the lightpath is established (released).…”

“…On the one hand, different debouncing grouping times could be analyzed to investigate the trade-off between the number of LSPs installed simultaneously and the grouping time to wait for them. On the other hand, signal power control strategies [34] could be efficiently combined with the SDN distributed operation modes discussed in this paper.…”

“…This approach has been recently used for the validation of the previously referred EDFA gain adjustment using a cognitive methodology [17]. Similarly, a recent proposal on network-wide signal power control strategies that combine EDFA and WSS joint operation in combination with routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) [24] was experimentally validated using the traffic snapshot loader application [25].…”

“…The AN setup was assembled by the Transmission team, inside the Optical Technologies Division at CPqD Foundation, composed by Heitor Carvalho, Matheus Svolenski, Alexandre Andrade, and Matheus Magalhães under the leadership of Miquel Garrich and Juliano Oliveira. Experiments accomplished in this setup led to several publications, such as[132,135,136,137,138,139,140,141,142,143,144,145,146,147].…”
