Effects of SiO2 particle size on the corrosion resistance of fluoropolymer/SiO2 composite coatings

Abstract: The surfaces of SiO 2 ultra-fine particles with different sizes have been modified by γ-(2, 3epoxypropoxy)propytrimethoxysilane (KH-560) silane coupling agent. Then the homogeneous fluoropolymer/SiO 2 composite coatings have been successfully prepared on mild steel substrates. The surface grafting of KH-560 on SiO 2 particles was detected by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The surface morphologies and corrosion resistance of fl… Show more

“…Over the past few years, fluoropolymers [1][2][3][4] have attracted much attention due to their many advantages, such as weather resistance, heat resistance, and solvent resistance [5,6]. As the C-F bonds are particularly strong (bond energy of 485 kJ mol −1 ) and the fluorine atoms exhibit low polarizability and strong electronegativity [7], polymers containing a significant fraction of fluorine atoms usually possess excellent chemical and thermal stability [8].…”

“…There are a few well established traditional coating processes are being used for deposit polymer coating, such as solvent-based system; powder coating process; fluidized bed coating process and flame spray coating process. Many polymer-based coatings are deposited by spray/brushing/dipping following by curing method for anti-corrosion, anti-graffiti, transparent hydrophobic, lubricating applications [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. A recent study reports Polytetrafluoroethylene coating deposited by magnetron sputtering may act as oil adsorbing layer [14].…”
