Effects of spiked metals on the MSW anaerobic digestion

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effects of eight metals on the anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in bioreactors. Anaerobic bioreactors containing 200 mL MSW mixed completely with 200 m L sludge seeding. Ca and K (0, 1000, 2000 and 6,000 mg L(-1)) and Cr, Ni, Zn, Co, Mo and W (0, 5, 50 and 100 mg  L(-1)) of various dose were added to anaerobic bioreactors to examine their anaerobic digestion performance. Results showed that except K and Zn, Ca (~728 to ~1,461 mg  L… Show more

“…Their corresponding average removal rates decreased from 86.17, 74.18, 84.84 % to 62.06, 57.07, 61.92 %.The decrease in the removal rate may be explained that increasing chromium concentration in the reactor inhibits the activity of anaerobic microorganisms. These results agree with Lo et al [18]. In R4 the removal rate decreased to 62.06, 57.07, 61.92 % for TSS, COD and BOD 5 .…”

“…The effects of heavy metals on the anaerobic digestion process have been widely studied over several decades (Lo et al 2012;Bertin et al 2012;Fang 1997;Fang and Chan 1997;Fang and Hui 1994). Most of these studies tended to examine the effect on the overall performance rather than on the individual stages, i.e., acidogenesis and methanogenesis.…”

“…En todos los ensayos la relación DQO/N/P se fijó en 200/5/1 de acuerdo con (Lo et al, 2010). Para prevenir una reducción en la actividad bacteriana la concentración de amoníaco no debe ser menor que 40-70 mg N .l -1 según lo reportado (Takashima y Speece, 1989).…”
