Forty-eight high-yielding dairy cows of the Swedish Red breed were used to examine the effects of providing pea-oat silage (P), grass-clover silage (G) and a 0AE50:0AE50 mixture of the silages (M) ad libitum in diets with two concentrate levels (7 or 10 kg d )1 ). A 9-week experiment, including a 2-week pre-experimental period in which the cows were all fed the same diet, and an in vivo apparent digestibility study were conducted comparing the six dietary treatments (M7, M10, P7, P10, G7, G10). Intake and digestibility of the diets and milk production and live weight of the cows were measured. The G silage [11AE3 MJ ME kg )1 dry matter (DM)] was first-cut grass herbage wilted for 24 h prior to addition of an additive, containing formic acid, propionic acid and ammonia, at 4 L t )1 fresh matter (FM). The P forage was cut when the peas were at pod fill and ensiled directly with 6 L t )1 FM of the same additive. The main hypothesis tested, that cows fed the M silage would produce more milk than the cows fed either the P or the G silages, was confirmed. The cows fed the M7 dietary treatment had similar milk yield and milk composition to cows offered the M10, G10 and P10 dietary treatments, and cows offered the G7 and P7 dietary treatments had lower milk and milk protein yields. This suggested that a mixed ration of pea-oat bi-crop and grass-clover silage has a concentrate-sparing effect, and that the use of pea-oat bi-crop and grass-clover silage as a mixed ration for high-yielding dairy cows can be recommended.

Mixed stands of faba bean + wheat (FBW; faba bean 0.84), and pea + wheat (PW; field pea 0.89 on dry matter [DM] basis) were harvested in Siikajoki, Finland. The crops were ensiled in triplicate in laboratory silos using four additive treatments: control without additive, two commercial lactic acid bacteria stains (LAB) and ACID (formic and propionic acids). Ensiling time was 105 days. The crops contained 173 and 181 g DM kg -1 and the water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentration was 156 and 176 g kg -1 DM in FBW and PW, respectively. ACID restricted silage fermentation in FBW (WSC 146; fermentation products 43 g kg -1 DM). The other silages had high concentration of fermentation products (180-204) and low WSC concentration (< 22 g kg -1 DM). The volatile fatty acid concentration was below 30 g kg -1 DM in all treatments. PW-ACID treatment resulted in higher ethanol concentration and better aerobic stability (>235 hours) compared to control or LAB silages. When ensiling wet legume whole crops effluent losses, extensive fermentation and poor aerobic stability may cause problems.

Palkoviljat voivat tehostaa kotimaista maidontuotantoa ja lisätä valkuaisrehujen omavaraisuutta. Lisäksi eri palkoviljalajeilla on tärkeä merkitys osana viljelykiertoa. Palkoviljasta voidaan hyödyntää pelkät siemenet tai koko kasvuston voi korjata kokoviljasäilörehuna. Palkoviljojen säilömistä vaikeuttaa kasvuston pieni kuiva-aine- ja sokeripitoisuus ja suuri puskurikapasiteetti. Tässä kokeessa tutkittiin valkolupiinin (Lupinus albus L.) säilöntää seoksena kevätvehnän kanssa. Säilörehun raaka-aineena oli Ludic-valkolupiini ja Amaretto-kevätvehnä, jotka kasvatettiin seoksena. Rehut korjattiin kahdessa kasvuvaiheessa vehnän ollessa taikinatuleentumisen alussa (1) ja lopussa (2) 13. ja 27.8.2012. Niiton jälkeen kasvilajeista yhdistettiin kaksi seosta, joista toisessa oli 1/3 valkolupiinia + 2/3 vehnää ja toisessa 2/3 valkolupiinia + 1/3 vehnää. Rehut säilöttiin ilman esikuivausta 1,5 litran laboratoriosiiloihin. Säilöntäainekäsittelyt olivat painorehu (PR) eli ei säilöntäainetta, muurahaishappo (MH) 4 l/tn 100 %:na happona, natriumnitriitin ja heksamiinin (heksametyleenitetramiinin) seos (NaHe) 3 l/tn ja homofermentatiivinen maitohappobakteerivalmiste (LAB) 1x106 pmy/g. Siilot avattiin kolmen kuukauden säilönnän jälkeen, jolloin rehuista otettiin analyysinäytteet ja niiden aerobista stabiilisuutta mitattiin 12 päivän ajan. Painorehun säilönnällinen laatu oli huono voihappokäymisen vuoksi. Suurimmat määrät mitattiin kasvuasteella 1 valkolupiinin osuuden ollessa 1/3. Voihappokäymisen vuoksi myös painorehun pH- ja ammoniakkiarvot olivat suuret ja jäännössokerin määrä pieni. Kaikki säilöntäainekäsittelyt paransivat rehun laatua painorehuun verrattuna, mutta säilöntäaineiden välillä oli selkeitä eroja. MH-rehujen laatu oli huono, sillä kaikissa rehuissa esiintyi runsasta voihappokäymistä ja osassa rehuista pH oli kohonnut. NaHe-rehujen laatu oli hyvä, jota osoitti käymistuotteiden pienet pitoisuudet. Biologinen säilöntäaine (LAB) tuotti kasvuasteella 1 molemmista seoksista hyvää rehua ilman voihappoa. Sen sijaan kasvuasteen 2 rehujen laatu oli huono voihappokäymisen takia. pH-arvot olivat voihappo-käymisestä huolimatta pieniä, mutta ammoniakkipitoisuudet olivat suuria. Etikkahapon pitoisuus oli kaikissa koerehuissa alle 20 g/kg ka ja kaikki rehut olivat aerobisesti stabiileja. Valkolupiini- kevätvehnäseoksen säilöntä on tämän kokeen perusteella haastavaa. Suurimmat voihappomäärät mitattiin painorehussa aikaisemman kasvuasteen seoksissa. Painorehun huono laatu oli odotettavissa rehukasvin säilöntäominaisuuksien takia. MH-rehujen laatu oli poikkeuksellisen huono vaikka MH-käsittely laski rehumassan pH:n heti säilöntäainekäsittelyn yhteydessä erittäin alas (noin 3,6). LAB-käsittely toimi hyvin aikaisessa kehitysvaiheessa, mutta tulos oli huono myöhemmin korjatussa rehussa. Paras ja tasaisin rehun laatu saatiin NaHe-käsittelyllä. NaHe-rehujen laatu oli pienen voihappo-, etikkahappo- ja ammoniakkipitoisuuden perusteella hyvä vaikka pH olikin joissain rehuissa melko korkea.
