Effects of starvation stress on jade perch scortum barcoo based on proteomics analysis

Abstract: Proteins related to antioxidant defence systems and energy maintenance play a vital role in resisting starvation in fish. However, studies on the underlying molecular mechanism of starvation stress in the jade perch Scortum barcoo are very limited. Thus, the proteomic changes in S. barcoo during fasting were investigated by stable isotope labelling and high‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry (iTRAQ‐LC‐ MS/MS) in the present study. Therefore, a total of 3324 proteins were identified, inc… Show more

“…During transportation, the pathways related to lipid metabolism utilization in crab muscle might upregulate to provide energy to resist starvation. Studies have shown that the compensation and content of fatty acid changed in jade perch (Scortum barcoo) during starvation, potentially impacting its flavor . The downregulation of lipid metabolism showed that the function of the cell membrane in crab muscle was impaired.…”

“…Studies have shown that the compensation and content of fatty acid changed in jade perch (Scortum barcoo) during starvation, potentially impacting its flavor. 69 The downregulation of lipid metabolism showed that the function of the cell membrane in crab muscle was impaired. This phenomenon could be attributed to the downregulation of energy metabolism and the nutritional function, potentially altering the taste of crab after transportation, thus leading to a decline in the sensory scores (Figure 1A) of crab muscle.…”

“…Alizadeh et al (2021) found that the purine metabolism capacity of Russian sturgeon was reduced after prolonged starvation. Moreover, Xie et al (2021) found that downregulated proteins in the purine and pyrimidine metabolism pathways were enriched in Australian jewel perch after starvation. The reduction of all three metabolic capacities is inseparable from reducing energy expenditure.…”

“…Among the five common pathways, the TCA cycle is central to the final metabolic pathway of the three major energy sources [ 69 ]. These substrates generated from energy stores may participate in the TCA cycle, an aerobic process for producing ATP by oxidating acetate derived from energy reserves [ 64 , 70 ], thereby satisfying the energy demands for fish.…”
