Effects of Students’ Effort Scores in a Structured Inquiry Unit on Long-Term Recall Abilities of Content Knowledge

Abstract: The influence of students' investment and perception during participation in structured inquiry-based learning on their longterm retention was analyzed to gain more insights into the underlying reasons for long-term retention through structured inquiry learning. Therefore achievement was correlated to effort, lesson rating and perceived competence for learning (PCL), and subject grades. 126 ninth graders participating in a structured inquiry-based interdisciplinary Biology and Physics module were analyzed. Stu… Show more

“…The simple fact that acquired short-term knowledge did not remain constant after the intervention is not surprising, when taking transfer processes from short-term to long-term memory into account (Driscoll, 2005). This result is in line with the literature: For instance, Goldschmidt and Bogner (2015) or Schmid and Bogner (2015) reported similar learning patterns in student-active learning environments, both formal (the first one) and informal (the latter). Comparing studentcentered and teacher-centered environments, Gerstner and Bogner (2010) came to quite similar results for both treatments.…”

“…The assessment of knowledge, each student performs pretest and posttest activities at each meeting. At the final meeting, students are given a test according to the material that has been done Structured inquiry learning can not only lead to sustainable knowledge but also reveal long-term acquisition of knowledge as positively linked to students' effort during the inquiry lesson (Schmid & Bogner, 2015). The details of the assessment of knowledge that has been passed by students are in the following Table 4.…”
