Effects of supernumerary heterochromatin on chiasma condition in two species of Acrididae (Orthoptera)

Abstract: Amblytropidia australis and Dichroplus elongatus were found to be polymorphic for supernumerary heterochromatin. In both, basic karyotypes are 2n = 22 + XO in males.Mitotically unstable extra chromosomes were detected in a population of A. australis. The Bs are telocentric and their number varies from O to 2 within individuals. Mean frequencies of interstitial and total chiasmata at diplotene were compared between individuals with and without Bs. The mean frequency of interstitial chiasmata increases with the … Show more

“…This effect is stable through time since it was also observed in previsous studies (LORAY et al 1991). The same holds for segments ss9 and ss.o, which also reduce the frequency of chiasmata in their neighbourhood (REMIS 1989;LoRAY et al 1991).…”

“…In Dichroplus elongatus, these chromosomes seem to be endemic of populations of Tucuman, since they are virtually absent in the rest of the Argentinian populations sampled so far (SEQUEIRA et al, submitted;REMis 1989). The frequency of this polymorphism seem to be rather stable through time since B frequency has not varied significantly through a period of 10 years in Raco (RA) and 5 years in Tafi Viejo (TV).…”

“…This effect was also rarely found among the Orthoptera. Indeed, only significant increases in chiasma frequencies were previously reported as in Myrmeleotettix maculatus UoHN andHEWITT 1965a, 1965b;HEWITT and JoHN 1970), Eyprepocnemis plorans (CAMA-CHO et al 1980), Euthystira brachyptera (FLETCHER and HEWITT 1980), Cylindrotettix obscurus (CoLOMBO 1989) and Amblytropidia australis (REMIS 1989).…”

“…Among grasshoppers there is often a basal level of abnormal spermatids (SUJA et al 1986); in addition to this, any chromosome alteration may increase this frequency (NUR 1969;}0HN and KING 1980;BIDAU 1986BIDAU , 1987BIDAU AND CONFALONIERI 1988: REMIS 1989aLORAY et a/. 1991).…”

“…In grasshoppers, several chromosome conditions as translocations, centric fusions, supernumerary chromosomes are associated with abnormal sperm formation (NuR 1969;JoHN and KING 1980;MoRAN 1981;PETERS 1982;BmAu 1986;1987, 1988BIDAU and CONFALONIERI 1988;REMIS 1989a;LORAY eta/. 1991).…”
