Effects of Tai Chi on balance and gait in stroke survivors: A systematic meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract: Tai chi may be beneficial for stroke survivors with respect to gait ability in the short term, but further large, long-term randomized controlled trials with standard evaluation indicators are needed to confirm this conclusion.

“…When practicing tai chi, patients need to control their body balance while continuously changing position and bodily center of gravity. In addition, tai chi helps improve the ability of controlling muscles and joints, which is associated with better balance control (62). Moreover, the results of sensitivity analysis based on the PEDro scale score were consistent with the previous findings, except for physical function and bodily pain, which might be due to insufficient eligible studies.…”

“…One study showed that tai chi promoted health, prevented disease, and had a positive effect on arterial stiffness and static/dynamic balance (15). Some studies have shown that tai chi can enhance the use of active neural networks by regulating physical and psychological methods (14).…”

“…Traditional Chinese exercise can effectively reduce systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), thereby improving symptoms in patients with cardiovascular disease (14). Some studies regard to the following aspects: generating random sequences, allocation of hidden methods, application of the blinding method, incomplete results, selective reporting of results, and other bias.…”

“…44 , 49 , 50 Meta-analyses also suggest a possible role for tai chi in stroke rehabilitation to improve balance and gait and prevent falls. 44 , 51 , 52 Further, studies indicate tai chi may reduce fractures, a common consequence of falls, by improving bone mineral density in osteoporosis. A clinical trial demonstrated statistically significant improvements after 9 months, with participation in at least 75% of classes, suggesting results may depend on length and compliance with intervention.…”
