Effects of Temperature on Fretting Corrosion Between Alloy 690TT and 405 Stainless Steel in Pure Water

Abstract: In pressurized water reactor, fretting corrosion has become the main reason for the failure of 690TT heat exchanger tubes. The effect of temperature on the fretting corrosion behavior between 690TT tube and 405 stainless steel (SS) bar has been studied during 10 6 fretting cycles. The overall average coefficient of friction (COF) values descends with an increase in test temperature, while the width of worn scar becomes wider. The severest fretting corrosion happens when the test temperature is at 100 °C. The w… Show more

“…Due to the pH value of the secondary side water in the PWR being usually controlled at 9.0~10.0 [3,4], the solution can act as an electrolyte for the electrochemical corrosion of the SG tube. Combined with fretting, the mechanical removal of passive oxide film accelerated the material's deterioration [5].…”

“…The other is the chemical degradation which can be accelerated by fretting. In recent years, many investigations on fretting corrosion of Inconel 690TT have been carried out with the fretting parameters including displacement amplitude [ 6 , 7 ], normal force [ 6 , 7 , 8 ], cycle number [ 9 , 10 ], temperature [ 3 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], and microstructure evolution [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. However, the electrochemical effects are ignored under such a corrosive environment, especially the evolution of passive film.…”

“…Fretting corrosion is a type of fretting damage in which chemical reaction predominates between the constituents of contacting surface and environment [3]. Fretting corrosion is one of main failure modes in SG, mainly occurring in a limited position between the heat transfer tube and its support frame in high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) water [4][5][6]. At this stage, the research on fretting corrosion in simulated secondary side HTHP water has become mainstream, which can provide reference for the safe operation of heat transfer tubes under real working condition.…”
