The increased resistance of pathogenic bacteria to multiple antimicrobial agents is becoming a significant public health threat. For many pathogenic bacteria there are already limited or no effective antimicrobials available to treat the infections caused by them. Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram‐negative, biofilm‐forming, nonmotile coccobacillus and a major human pathogen causing hospital‐acquired infections, such as ventilator‐associated pneumonia, bacteraemia, meningitis, and urinary tract and wound infections. There is therefore a clear need to discover new compounds and strategies to overcome widespread antimicrobial resistance, with a focus on A. baumannii strains. Star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f.) has been widely used as an ingredient in traditional Chinese cooking, as a flavouring agent, and as a medicine for over 3000 years; however, the essential oil (EO) isolated from star anise has not been further characterized in terms of its bioactivities and potential applications. In this work, a screening of the biological properties of star anise EO together with its chemical characterization were performed. Special attention was given to the impact of this EO in the formation of biofilms by A. baumannii. It was demonstrated that star anise EO is able to scavenge free radicals, to inhibit lipid peroxidation, and to inhibit protein denaturation, which is associated with its antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties. Moreover, the effects of the EO on the planktonic and biofilm cells of A. baumannii, inhibiting the formation of biofilms, dispersing preformed biofilms, and decreasing the capacity of the bacterial cells to adhere to polystyrene, together with its ability to inhibit quorum sensing, were also demonstrated.

The power of odour volatiles from unifloral melipona honey evaluated by gas chromatography–olfactometry Osme techniques

BACKGROUND: The quality and power of each odorous volatile present in the headspace of unifloral honey velame branco (Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth) prepared by stingless uruçu (Melipona scutellaris Latrelle) were evaluated using the gas chromatography-olfactometry Osme technique. Five trained panellists evaluated the sensory chromatographic effluent in three replications, and the results were integrated by SCDTI software. RESULTS:Of the 42 compounds identified in the chromatogram, 17 odorous stimuli were detected by the sensory panel. Among these compounds, the most odoriferous impacts were pentanoate acetate 'ripe fruit', safranal green, medicinal plant and methyl eugenol 'clove, tea'. The furaneol compounds, hotrienol and benzaldehyde showed aroma notes associated with honey. CONCLUSION: These results are important since, in addition to revealing the presence of compounds that are not identified by other analytical methods, they can also assist in the verification of monofloral honeys compliance.

Croton is an extensive flowering plant genus in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Three croton compounds with the common ent-kaurane skeleton have been purified from Croton tonkinensis. Methods: We examined any modifications of croton components (i.e., croton-01 [ent-18-acetoxy-7α-hydroxykaur-16-en-15-one], croton-02 [ent-7α,14β-dihydroxykaur-16-en-15-one] and croton-03 [ent-1β-acetoxy-7α,14β-dihydroxykaur-16-en-15-one] on either hyperpolarization-activated cation current (Ih) or erg-mediated K+ current identified in pituitary tumor (GH3) cells and in rat insulin-secreting (INS-1) cells via patch-clamp methods. Results: Addition of croton-01, croton-02, or croton-03 effectively and differentially depressed Ih amplitude. Croton-03 (3 μM) shifted the activation curve of Ih to a more negative potential by approximately 11 mV. The voltage-dependent hysteresis of Ih was also diminished by croton-03 administration. Croton-03-induced depression of Ih could not be attenuated by SQ-22536 (10 μM), an inhibitor of adenylate cyclase, but indeed reversed by oxaliplatin (10 μM). The Ih in INS-1 cells was also depressed effectively by croton-03. Conclusion: Our study highlights the evidence that these ent-kaurane diterpenoids might conceivably perturb these ionic currents through which they have high influence on the functional activities of endocrine or neuroendocrine cells.
