Effects of the South-North Water Diversion Project on the Water Dispatching Pattern and Ecological Environment in the Water Receiving Area: A Case Study of the Fuyang River Basin in Handan, China

Abstract: Inter-basin water transfer projects are widely used in water-stressed areas. North China is facing severe imbalance between water demand and water supply. The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) Project was built to transfer water from the Yangtze River Basin to the Hai River Basin. The Fuyang River Basin in the southern part of the Hai River Basin, passing through the Handan city, was chosen as the study area. To identify the effects of the SNWD Project on the water-receiving area, this paper used the decis… Show more

“…The documented purposes of schemes can be summarised into six primary groups: irrigation, municipal, industrial , hydropower, environmental and flood control . Of this list, environmental aims are the most diverse category, covering a range of sub-aims such as improvements to water quality, enhancing ecological sustainability and supplementing flows to meet environmental minimum flow requirements (Berkoff, 2003; Fu and Yang, 2019; Lund and Israel, 1995). Other usages are identified in the literature, for example, recreation, but the number of schemes which identify these are small, and they have a low priority when cited, so these have not been included here.…”

“…If the pollution is widespread and intense, it may also cause shutdown, and even affect social stability, resulting in a great impact on the economy and society of the downstream area. Since the construction of SNWDP, water delivery safety and water quality protection in the project have been a hot issue, which are addressed in many scientific papers focused on water environmental risk analysis [9][10][11], water security evaluation [12], water quality of reservoir and downstream [13,14], water pollution risk simulation and prediction [15,16] and emergency regulation and treatment of water quality [17,18]. However, there are few studies on the rapid prediction of sudden water pollution accidents in Shandong Section, and the methods, models and instruments used in the above studies need a large amount of basic data, while the operation of the model requires a lot of time [19][20][21].…”
