Introdução: O cigarro eletrônico tem ganhado evidência e popularidade desde 2003. O uso é mais prevalente na faixa etária entre 19 e 24 anos. Doenças pulmonares, alterações cardiovasculares, imunológicas, dermatológicas e bucais, decorrentes dos efeitos tóxicos proporcionados pelos diversos compostos do produto são um possível problema para o futuro da saúde pública. Objetivo: Identificar os efeitos tóxicos do uso do cigarro eletrônico nos mecanismos fisiológicos do corpo humano. Materiais e Métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura acerca das novas evidências sobre os efeitos tóxicos do cigarro eletrônico e a fisiopatologia envolvida. Utilizou-se a estratégia PICO para a elaboração da pergunta norteadora. Ademais, realizou-se o cruzamento dos descritores “cigarro eletrônico”; “toxicidade”; “fisiopatologia”, nas bases de dados National Library of Medicine (PubMed MEDLINE), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Ebscohost, Google Scholar e Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS). Resultados e Discussão: A grande maioria dos artigos mostrou uma relação prejudicial do uso dos cigarros eletrônicos em diversos sistemas, como a exacerbação da asma e da doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica, o aumento do risco de trombose e da aterosclerose, a alteração do funcionamento dos macrófagos e das plaquetas, a redução do óxido nítrico e outros mecanismos. Conclusão: Diversos mecanismos fisiopatológicos foram elucidados em diversos estudos, porém é necessário que mais estudos, sobretudo longitudinais e com a identificação do padrão de uso e dos componentes dos e-cigarros, sejam desenvolvidos para a consolidação das evidências já propostas, principalmente a longo prazo.

PurposeLip prints are unique and have potential for use as a human identifier. The purpose of this study was to observe possible cheiloscopy differences of individuals with and without parafunctional oral habits such as smoking, vaping, playing a wind instrument or using an asthma inhaler.MethodsThis IRB approved blinded cross‐sectional observation pilot study collected lip prints from 66 individuals, three of which were excluded. Participants cleansed their lips, then lipstick was applied to the vermillion zones of the upper and lower lips. Adhesive tape was applied to the lips and prints were transferred to white bond paper for viewing purposes. Each set of included lip prints was divided into quadrants and dichotomized into a group of those with an oral parafunctional habit or with no such habits. Each quadrant sample was then manually analysed and classed according to the gold standard Suzuki and Tsuchihashi system.ResultsA total of 252 dichotomized lip print quadrants (with habits n = 76, 30.2%, and without habits n = 176, 69.8%) were analysed. Type II patterns were the most common for examined quadrant samples; however, no statistically significant differences (Pearson's chi‐squared test, p = 0.366) were observed between pattern classifications of samples with and without parafunctional oral habits.ConclusionsThere is no statistically significant difference of lip print patterns between individuals with and without parafunctional oral habits. Further research on populational variations is needed for cheiloscopy to aid in human identifications.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating, chronic, (auto)inflammatory disease primarily affecting apocrine gland-rich areas of the body. Although pathogenic mechanisms responsible for HS have not yet been fully elucidated, it is a multifactorial process whose main target is the terminal follicle. The role of the inflammatory process (and consequently of cytokine milieu) and of several other factors (genetics, lifestyle, hormonal status, microbiome, innate and adaptive immune systems) involved in HS pathogenesis has been investigated (and often defined) over the years with a view to transferring research results from bench to bedside and describing a unique and universally accepted pathogenetic model. This review will update readers on recent advances in our understanding of HS pathogenesis and novel (potential) medical therapies for patients with moderate-to-severe HS.
