Effects of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation at different frequencies on perioperative anesthetic dosage, recovery, complications, and prognosis in video-assisted thoracic surgical lobectomy: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: TEAS is a safe noninvasive adjunctive intervention for anesthesia management among patients undergoing VATS lobectomy. TEAS at 2/100 Hz can reduce intraoperative opioid dosage and slow the decrease of PaO during one-lung ventilation. It can also effectively reduce pain score, extubation time, and PACU stay immediately after surgery. Further, 100 Hz TEAS can reduce PONV morbidity.

“…Our data showed that TEAS reduced the postoperative sufentanil consumption by almost 16%, suggesting that TEAS may exert an analgesic effect. Similarly, the incidences of PONV were dramatically reduced, adding weight to a previous study suggesting analgesic benefit of TEAS for lung cancer patients . The findings of the present study are significant because prevalence of ERAS is increasing.…”

“…Similarly, the incidences of PONV were dramatically reduced, adding weight to a previous study suggesting analgesic benefit of TEAS for lung cancer patients. 8 The findings of the present study are significant because prevalence of ERAS is increasing. These findings will lead to an increasing number of modalities for surgery, especially nonpharmacological approaches.…”

“…Huang et al reported a decrease in PONV ( P = 0.044) corresponding to a transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation at 100 Hz, and a lower postoperative visual analgesia score ( P = 0.047) with frequencies of 2/100 Hz. Reduced visual analgesia scores may in turn be responsible for a decrease in postoperative opioid consumption, known as one of the four major risk factors for PONV ( 9 , 34 ). High versus low frequency electrical stimulus seems to function differently within the brain.…”
