Physical exercise is a planned, purposeful action to keep a healthy lifestyle and improve physical fitness. Physical exercise has been widely used as a non-pharmacological approach to preventing and improving a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic disease, and neurodegenerative disease. However, the effects of physical exercise on sepsis have not been summarized until now. In this review, we discuss the effects of physical exercise on multiple organ functions and the short- and long-time outcomes of sepsis. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effects of physical exercise on sepsis are discussed. In conclusion, we consider that physical exercise may be a beneficial and non-pharmacological alternative for the treatment of sepsis.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Parkinson's disease to minimize the adverse effects of the disease and drug side effects on the patient. Using levodopa combined with pramipexole is an effective therapy for treating Parkinson's disease. Objectives — This study aims to evaluate the treatment outcome of combination therapy with levodopa and pramipexole compared to levodopa monotherapy in Vietnamese Parkinson's patients. Material and Methods — A randomized controlled clinical trial with a 1:1 randomized ratio of 80 individuals with Parkinson's disease. The intervention group received a combination therapy with levodopa/benserazide and pramipexole, and the control group received a monotherapy with levodopa/benserazide. Motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms, The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating (UPDRS), and The Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) scores were assessed before, after, and a follow-up period of 1 and 4 weeks after discharge to evaluate the treatment outcome. Results — Combining therapy with levodopa and pramipexole led to statistically significant improvements in UPDRS and PDQ-39 scores (p<0.05). The mean difference in UPDRS parts I, II, and III after 4 weeks of discharge was -0.5 (p=0.014), -1.68 (p=0.005), and -2.52 (p=0.010) respectively. The quality of life was also enhanced by combining therapy due to a better reduction of PDQ-39 score: 26.0±6.3 versus 32.7±6.4 (p<0.001). The most common side effects were headache, nausea/vomiting, and somnolence. Conclusions — Treatment with levodopa combined with pramipexole improves clinical symptoms and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's, as evidenced by improvements in UPDRS and PDQ-39 scores.

Physical exercise is of great significance for maintaining human health. Exercise can provide varying degrees of benefits to cognitive function at all stages of life cycle. Currently, with the aging of the world’s population and increase of life expectancy, cognitive dysfunction has gradually become a disease of high incidence, which is accompanied by neurodegenerative diseases in elderly individuals. Patients often exhibit memory loss, aphasia and weakening of orientation once diagnosed, and are unable to have a normal life. Cognitive dysfunction largely affects the physical and mental health, reduces the quality of life, and causes a great economic burden to the society. At present, most of the interventions are aimed to maintain the current cognitive level and delay deterioration of cognition. In contrast, exercise as a nonpharmacological therapy has great advantages in its nontoxicity, low cost and universal application. The molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of exercise on cognition are complex, and studies have been extensively centered on neural plasticity, the direct target of exercise in the brain. In addition, mitochondrial stability and energy metabolism are essential for brain status. Meanwhile, the organ-brain axis responds to exercise and induces release of cytokines related to cognition. In this review, we summarize the latest evidence on the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise on cognition, and point out directions for future research.
