Effects of truck traffic on top-down fatigue cracking performance of flexible pavements using a new mechanics-based analysis framework

Abstract: The mechanics-based analysis framework predicts top-down fatigue cracking initiation time in asphalt concrete pavements by utilizing fracture mechanics and mixture morphology-based property. To reduce the level of complexity involved, traffic data was characterized and incorporated into the framework using the equivalent single axle load (ESAL) approach. There is a concern that this kind of simplistic traffic characterization might result in erroneous performance predictions and pavement structural designs. Th… Show more

“…It is well known that the short-term aging during mix production and laydown directly determines the starting point of the long-term field aging. Incorrect predictions of the effects of short-term aging may lead to the erroneous prediction of both the short and longterm aged binder properties and further affect the prediction of the long-term asphalt mixture properties and pavement performance [22][23][24]. This paper presents a new short-term asphalt aging predictive model for asphalt binders.…”

“…The contact area between the surface concrete slab layer and the wheel during vehicle movement depends on tyre pressure; as tyre pressure decreases, the contact area increases. In general, the contact area has an irregular shape which consists of a middle rectangular part and two semi-circular side parts, as shown in equation (2).…”

“…Temperature variation also causes other distress, such as fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and rutting [1]. Traffic loads and environmental conditions (temperature variations) are the main causes of fatigue cracking [2]. Rigid pavements consist of concrete surface slabs with high strength, connected by tie bars or dowel steel bars.…”

“…The mechanics-based analysis and design framework is used for the performance evaluation of field pavement sections when considering their resistance to fatigue crack initiation. It was developed on the basis of hot mix asphalt fracture mechanics and incorporates mixture morphology influence on key damage and fracture properties ( 25 27 ). This framework, unlike the AASHTO MEPDG, appropriately takes into account the effects of aging and healing on accumulated damage and captures the influence of strain rate through energy based damage and resistance parameters.…”
