Effects of Ultrasonic-Aided Quenching on the Corrosion Resistance of GB 35CrMoV Steel in Seawater Environment

Abstract: Abstract:The effects of ultrasonic-aided quenching (USQ) on the microstructure and corrosion properties of 35CrMoV steel in a simulated seawater environment (wt % (NaCl) = 3.5) were studied. The corrosion properties of the steel were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to characterize the microstructure and corrosion products. Combined with the EIS equivalent ci… Show more

“…Reference material used in this investigation was commercial GB 35CrMoV steel, which is a mid-carbon steel commonly used in the industry due to its high fatigue limit, high static strength and good creep strength. Thus, it is widely used in the production parts, such as main shafts, crankshafts, gears and turbine impellers [19][20][21][22]. Excellent wear resistance is necessary for smooth operation and long service life of parts.…”

“…It can be easily seen from Figure 5a,b, that the polarization curves obtained at different strain rates and deformation temperatures are similar in morphology and the I corr displacement is obvious. There is no passivation and the anode region is an active dissolution of metal, which are the results of the characteristic adsorption of Cl − onto the surface of the specimen, preventing the formation of the passivation film [1]. In addition, the E corr shift of the polarization curve and obvious changes in the anode region can also be observed, where the anode region represents the dissolution of the matrix at high potential and the cathode region delegates the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction associated with water reduction [12].…”

“…In general, the reactions in the second and third parts occur in the middle- and low-frequency regions of EIS, which are related to the corrosion resistance of the specimens. The corrosion resistance of the samples is evaluated by combining the corrosion product resistance R f with the charge transfer resistance R ct (R corr = R f + R ct ) [1,33,35,40]. Generally, the corrosion resistance enhances as R corr increases.…”

“…As a type of mechanical energy, ultrasound is widely used in the field of material processing [10,11]. Wu et al [12] applied ultrasonic vibration to the tungsten electrode in PAW torch, and then acoustic energy field is exerted in the plasma arc.…”
