ObjectivesThis study aimed to identify and systematically review the literature on the use of mobile technology in nursing education. The research findings could evidence the effectiveness of mobile technology in undergraduate nursing students' learning outcomes.MethodsComputerized searches were conducted using the Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases for relevant primary studies and limited to those between 2000 and February 2018. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies published in either English or Korean were included and critically appraised using Joanna Briggs Institute tools.ResultsSeven RCTs and 7 quasi-experimental studies were identified. The mobile device and intervention applied varied throughout all the studies. Studies published earlier in the 2000s found that immediate access to clinical and pharmacological referencing information through the mobile device increased students' efficacy in clinical practice. Later studies, which were mostly conducted in Korea, reported that smartphone-based applications could promote nursing students' learning motivation and satisfaction but not their clinical skills and knowledge.ConclusionsWe still seem to be in the beginning stage of implementing mobile technology in nursing education due to the limited implication of mobile technology and inconsistent research conclusions. In the future, rigorous primary empirical studies are needed to suggest the effective use of mobile devices in nursing education.

Internship Programs for Undergraduate Health Informatics Students in Saudi Arabia

Background Internship program is one of the experiential learning methods that enable students to gain practicum experience and learn from specialised people. This type of learning is a professional gateway to integrate knowledge with practical application. This study defines the state of health informatics internship programs in Saudi Arabia and examines the difference between interns and graduated students’ perceptions about the experience of health informatics internship programs in Saudi hospitals. Methods An online survey was constructed and distributed to health informatics students through social media platforms and specialised groups. The sample size included 89 participants from different universities across Saudi Arabia regions. Results The findings indicate that the majority of participants believe that internship programs have a positive impact on students’ skills and provide students with non-monetary incentives. ANOVA analysis and t-test results indicated that there is no significance difference between the interns and graduates perceptions (p-value 0.495, alpha value 0.005) Conclusion Health informatics internship programs in the Kingdom should consider some aspects: the selection criteria of internship sites, the linkage between education outcomes and Saudi labour market needs, effective experiential learning methods, well-defined structure of health informatics internship program and competencies framework.

An Integrative Review of Smartphone Utilization for Nursing Education among Nursing College Students in South Korea

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to (a) synthesize nursing education literature using a smartphone for Korean nursing college students based on Whittemore and Knafl's integrative five-step review method and to (b) evaluate the quality appraisal of each article using Gough's weight of evidence. Methods: Articles published in Korea were identified through electronic search engines and scholarly websites using a combination of three search terms, including nursing student, smartphone, and education. Scientific, peer-reviewed articles in nursing education for Korean college nursing students, written in Korean or in English, and published between January 2000 and May 2018 were included in this review. Thirteen papers met the inclusion criteria and had above average ratings in quality appraisals. Results: Three characteristics related to nursing education using a smartphone were derived: (a) as a familiar media, motivating learning and enabling self-directed learning, (b) for the purpose of education or evaluation utilizing the educational movie of application, and (c) the iterative exercise of smartphone usage reinforces student learning. Conclusion: Smartphone use is an effective tool for improving nursing knowledge and skills for nursing college students in nursing education. Future research is needed to standardize smartphone applications across schools for nursing education.
