Effects of various solvent concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures and time values on the extraction yield of anthocyanin from Vietnam Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Roselle)

Abstract: Nowadays, the trends in human health and fossil fuel dependent markets present opportunities for agricultural crops as renewable sources in several substitutes of synthetic components in clothing, fuels, and food. This research focused on anthocyanins along with protocatechuic acid and quercetin, which have been recognized as bioactive compounds in Hibiscus sabdariffa L. aqueous extracts. Laboratory extraction study was conducted on various solvent concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures and time value… Show more

“…Thus, a high solid‐to‐liquid ratio could encourage a growing concentration gradient, resulting in diffusion rate increase and promoting more solvent extraction of solids. Once equilibrium is established, the likelihood of bio‐active components coming into touch with the extracting solvent will not increase any more (Nhut Pham et al, 2019). This assertion is in agreement with our findings.…”

“…In this case, the compound will be kept inside the crude drug's vacuole. However, if the crude drug-solvent combination reaches a certain ratio, plant cells will absorb the solvent rapidly and swell to the point of bursting, where the compound is simultaneously released inside the vacuole [13]. Therefore, the S/L ratio of 1:15 g/mL was chosen for the next step of extraction.…”

“…A suitable extraction technology that is applicable on an industrial scale should, however, be developed first to utilize roselle calyces as a source of natural dyes. Several anthocyanin extraction methods from the calyces are heat-assisted extraction (HAE), ultrasoundassisted extraction (UAE), maceration, infusion, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) [9,[11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
