Effects of Varying Dietary Protein and Energy Levels on Growth Rate and Body Fat of Broilers

Abstract: Three experiments were conducted in which the protein and energy levels were varied in an attempt to produce broiler carcasses with more acceptable fat deposition at market age. Male broilers had more abdominal fat than female broilers to 46 days of age. Females deposited abdominal fat at a rate greater than that of the males after 46 days of age. A significant percentage of the weight gain after 46 days was in the form of abdominal fat in the female. Feeding no supplemental fat in the diet for the first seven… Show more

“…Similar results were reported b! Sunde (1956) and by Hargis and Creger (1980) No interaction between dietary CP and energy levels was noted, in contrast to reports by Jackson et al (1982a,b). This indicates that the reduced body weight of birds on high CP starter diets was due to the CP level of the diet and the subsequent C:P ratio.…”

“…In the present studies no significant differences in body weight were observed even though abdominal fat contents varied significantly. Hargis and Creger (1980) and Maurice et al (1982) also observed influences of the diet during the 1st 7 days on subsequent fat deposition in broilers.…”

“…(1977) observed no significant effect on fat pad development when broiler chicks were fed ad libitum a low energy diet (2,233 kcal metabolizable energy (ME)/kg) compared to those fed a more typical energy diet. Hargis and Creger (1980) reported that feeding no supplemental fat in the diet for the first 7 days of age, regardless of the energy level of the finisher diet, produced the least abdominal fat in 49-dayold broilers. More abdominal fat was produced, however, when supplemental fat was withheld from 0 to 10 or 0 to 14 days of age.…”
