Effects of virtual reality on preoperative anxiety in children: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials

Abstract: Aims To synthesise and evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality interventions in preoperative children. Background Children consider operations as a predictable threat and stressful event. Children's anxiety before an operation increases as the time draws closer. Children could understand the operating room environment and process before the operation using virtual reality, which may reduce their anxiety before an operation. Design A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials foll… Show more

“…Virtual reality (VR) interventions have been demonstrated to be an effective distraction technique owing to a high degree of immersion due to its improved tracking, stereoscopy, and wide field of view that can make Virtual reality experiences feel realistic and effectively divert the patients' attention from adverse stimuli ( 58 ). In a related review, Tas et al validated the effectiveness of Virtual reality techniques in reducing preoperative anxiety and pain in various medical procedures ( 59 ). Accordingly, the use of smartphones and tablet-based interactive interventions has enabled pediatric patients to be more comfortable and has alleviated feelings of distress and anxiety.…”

“…Namely, nursing care through immersion virtual reality has a deeper influence on patients, which is consistent with the effectiveness of VR interventions in reducing preoperative anxiety reported in previous studies ( Niki et al, 2020 ; Turrado et al, 2021 ). Multiple studies have noted that preoperative anxiety in children undergoing elective surgery and general anesthesia is significantly reduced by preoperative virtual experiences or distraction therapy in the operating room ( Park et al, 2019 ; Chen et al, 2022 ). Our findings may further support this opinion in adult interventional procedures.…”

“…The results add to existing evidence that supports the use of VR in a perioperative setting. For example, one recent meta-analysis found that virtual reality significantly reduced preoperative anxiety in children and significantly increased children's compliance with anesthesia [49].…”
