Effects of vortex structure on performance characteristics of a multiblade fan with inclined tongue

Abstract: The effects of complex vortex structure on the internal flow and performance of a centrifugal fan with inclining symmetrical volute tongue were investigated by numerical simulations. The comparison between experimental results and numerical results on performance of a centrifugal fan is presented. To provide a quantitative analysis on the vortex structure in the internal flow of fan, Q criterion as a rule of vortex decision is implemented. Effects on vortex structure and X-velocity of the volute outlet are ana… Show more

“…The blade shape of test cases and some key parameters of the baseline model are presented in Figure 2. The complex vortex structure of the baseline model on the internal flow and performance is referred to in the previous work by Lun [13]. As shown in Figure 2, we can obtain that the blade profile of the baseline model is a single circular arc with the length of 10.904 mm; model-L refers to the model with a longer blade, and model-S with a shorter blade.…”

“…The Multi Frames of Reference (MFR) technique is one such interface model. The MFR approach obtained by ANSYS CFX 16.0 is implemented to calculate the part of the impeller in the reference frame and the other parts in the stationary reference frame [12,13]. An interface is used at each junction where the frame change of reference takes place.…”

“…The maximum value of pressure is on monitoring point T2 and the minimum value of pressure is on monitoring point T3. This is because the shedding vortex on the blade hits the volute tongue and causes large pressure fluctuations [50][51][52][53]. To clearly explain how the STTE profile affects unsteady pulsations, the DES model is used in a transient-state simulation to capture the fluctuating pressure signals and the flow patterns.…”

“…However, the fin on the bottom wall had a tiny effect on the streamline and temperature distributions. The effect of natural convection on the flow in an enclosed space has also been considered in other applications [14][15][16][17].…”
