Biodiesel has a vital role in recent years as an alternative fuel for diesel engines.Biodiesel was produced from waste cooking oil by transesterification process. Physical and chemical properties of biodiesel blends up to 20% were near to diesel fuel. The aim of this study to is to reuse biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil as a fuel and make a comparative study of performance parameters and exhaust emissions between biodiesel blends. Diesel-waste cooking oil biodiesel blends of 10 and 20% were prepared. Experimental investigations were tested in a four stroke, single cylinder, diesel engine at a constant speed of 1500 rpm and variable loads. Diesel-biodiesel blends provided significant increase in fuel consumption, specific fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, NO x , CO 2 and oxygen concentrations about diesel fuel. Waste cooking oil biodiesel blends resulted in significant decrease in thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, air-fuel ratio, CO and HC emissions about diesel fuel. Performance characteristics and exhaust emissions concentrations for biodiesel blends were near to diesel fuel, so, we recommend using biodiesel blends up to 20% in diesel engines without engine modifications.

Transportation, industrial, commercial, agricultural and domestic sector mainly relies and uses diesel fuel to produce mechanical energy or power. Alternative fuels have also been introduced and using alternative fuels, continues to be a challenge. Biodiesel being a part of the alternative fuel, obtained from animal fat and vegetable oil, good alternative to conventional diesel. Popularity of biodiesel all of the world have recently increased because of its renewability, biodegradability, non-toxic, easy availability and better emission. For the use of biodiesel, engine modification is not needed. It is also free from Sulphur and aromatics, which helps in reducing exhaust emission, compared to conventional gasoline and also renders same fuel efficiency. Biodiesel could be blended in any ratio with the diesel and can also be used directly in the engine. Because of the increasing cost of production of the biodiesel, use of waste cooking oil in the production of biodiesel would help in reducing the cost and would be a sustainable solution. It is sad that the waste cooking oil is discarded in the drain. Disposal of the waste cooking oil can lead to blockage, smell and environmental pollution. This paper simulates the NOx emission for Diesel and waste cooking oil biodiesel.

The aim of this study was to find out the thermal and environmental performance of a four-stroke, single-cylinder, direct injection 10-kW CI engine at varying engine load conditions using different test fuels. The formulated fuels, viz. CeO 2 nanoparticles-dispersed water-diesel-biodiesel fuel blend (CNWEDB) and water-diesel-biodiesel fuel blend (WEDB), were prepared using emulsification technique using CeO 2 nanoparticles and water as additives in diesel-biodiesel blend (B20). The measured fuel properties of CNWEDB and WEDB satisfied the criteria of Indian Standard for biodiesel indicating their suitability for use in CI engine. The engine was run at various loads (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) randomly to assess its thermal and environmental performance with all test fuels. Thermal performance of CI engine was evaluated by measuring the parameters such as brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific fuel consumption (bsfc), exhaust gas temperature (EGT) and heat balance for all test fuels. The environmental performance of engine was assessed by measuring CO, HC and NO x emissions for all test fuels. Adding water and CeO 2 nanoparticles into B20 improved BTE of engine by 7.65% over diesel. Also, the minimum heat losses were observed at 80% engine load for CNWEDB indicating a better conversion of fuel energy to useful work. EGT and bsfc of engine reduced with CNWEDB over WEDB and B20 fuels. Engine fueling with CNWEDB emitted 12.82%, 14.46% and 14.20%; and 30.77%, 43.67% and 26.80% lesser concentration of CO, HC and NO x emissions over WEDB and diesel, respectively.Editorial responsibiility: Q.
