Effects of weight loss, induced by gastric bypass surgery, on HDL remodeling in obese women

Abstract: Journal of Lipid ResearchCardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Obesity is associated with hypertension, diabetes, elevated triglyceride (TG) levels, and decreased HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, all acknowledged as independent CVD risk factors by the AHA ( 1 ). Obesity, defi ned by body mass index (BMI) у 30 kg/m 2 , often coexists with the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with increased CVD risk. High BMI has been associated with increased risk … Show more

“…However, an increase in its activity is considered proatherogenic because it can reduce HDL concentrations and influence adipocyte morphology (16,32,33). Therefore, our results suggest that these overweight and obese children were exposed to a similar CETP-mediated proatherogenic phenotype to that of overweight and obese adults, which may be negated by weight loss as documented in adults (34).…”

“…Large ␣-1 particles increase with weight loss, niacin, certain statins (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin), and CETP inhibitors (52)(53)(54)(55)(56)(57). Increasing the concentrations of apo AI in ␣-1 HDL to Ͼ200 mg/L (0.52 mmol/L) with a simvastatin/niacin combination has been associated with lack of progression and in some individuals with regression of coronary atherosclerosis (51 ).…”

“…In contrast of other lipid fractions the effects of gastric bypass on HDL-C showed different and conflicting results between genders and age groups. Some authors suggest that the response of HDL-C is represented graphically by a "U" curve-shaped, with a decrease in the first month and a gradual increase after 6 months of surgery (3,23) . In fact, the average values found in our study groups suggest the formation of this curve, but in a discreet manner and with values without statistical change.…”
