Effects of Wen Dan Tang on insomnia-related anxiety and levels of the brain-gut peptide Ghrelin

Abstract: Ghrelin, a brain-gut peptide that induces anxiety and other abnormal emotions, contributes to the effects of insomnia on emotional behavior. In contrast, the traditional Chinese Medicine remedy Wen Dan Tang reduces insomnia-related anxiety, which may perhaps correspond to changes in the brain-gut axis. This suggests a possible relationship between Wen Dan Tang's pharmacological mechanism and the brain-gut axis. Based on this hypothesis, a sleep-deprived rat model was induced and Wen Dan Tang was administered u… Show more

“…One study indicated that Wen-Dan-Tang (WDT), a major component of CGKM, significantly reduced anxiety and prevented ghrelin level reduction due to sleep deprivation in the study subject, especially in the hypothalamus, thereby suggesting that the mechanism of WDT may correspond to changes in the brain–gut axis. 18 CSS has antidepressant-like effects and was mediated by reversing the stress-induced disruption of ERK5 expressions in the hippocampi of rats. 19 CGKM tables were composed of Chai-Hu-Jia-Long-Gu-Mu-Li-Tang, Xiao-Chaihu-Tang and WDT.…”

“…Previous studies have shown that different Chinese herbal compounds play different roles in the care of patients with prostate cancer. For example, Wen-Dan-Tang can effectively alleviate the anxiety associated with insomnia by regulating the performance of the ghrelin receptor in the hypothalamus and the concentration of leptin in the brain [19,20]. Chai-Hu-Jia-Long-Gu-Mu-Li-Tang can reduce the symptoms of hypogonadism caused by castration therapy, including sexual dysfunction, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia [21].…”
