Effects on Willingness to Pay for Marine Conservation: Evidence from Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract: The willingness to pay (WTP) for marine conservation is an important basis for the design of market-based marine protection strategies and sustainable marine environment development. Whether the individual was willing to pay and how much they would prefer to pay may be affected separately by different factors. Thus, we investigated the probability of paying for marine conservation and the payment amount to obtain evidence regarding the factors that influence the preferences of stakeholders. We considered two m… Show more

“…The knowledge and skills required for particular actions, the availability of time, and general capabilities and resources (such as literacy, money, social status, and power) are included under this concept. Additionally, sociodemographic variables (age, gender, education, race, and income) may be indicators or proxies for personal capabilities, because they may be important for behaviors that depend strongly on particular capabilities [45] (p. 417), [46].…”

“…Second, a quality-oriented environmental strategy with respect to marine litter is strongly recommended. Apart from the promotion of environmental cognition, fines and more trash cans [44,45], and efficient law implementation and enforcement mentioned before [46], when it comes to litter cleaning, plastic, butts and cans are the three main litter types and should be properly governed in the development of the coastal tourism industry. The perceptions of visitors regarding marine litter should also receive close attention because it will have an important impact on the effectiveness of litter removal.…”

“…The principal approaches strive to deduce the landscape value in monetary terms based on the willingness to pay (WTP) as a concrete tool to express the value in a context that considers both supply and demand [44,46]. These approaches are divided into direct methods, in which a sample of subjects declared willingness to pay for the benefits derived from an environmental condition in a simulated market, such as contingency analysis [47]; and indirect methods, wherein availability to pay is detected by the behaviors exhibited by the interviewees, such as the cost method travel and hedonic price [45]. The direct method of Contingent Valuation (CV) is designed to elicit stated preference [48].…”
