Box tree moth (BTM) Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) is the most harmful pest of different boxwood species in Europe and Asia including Caspian boxwood Buxus hyrcana in the Hyrcanian forests of Iran. Accessible and effective eco-friendly insecticides are required for the pest control. Thus, susceptibility of 2nd and 4th instar larvae of BTM to commercial formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), two plant extract formulations, Bio1® and Matrine®, and three insect growth regulator (IGR) insecticides, chlorfluazuron, chromafenozide and diflubenzuron were investigated in laboratory bioassay. Except for diflubenzuron, significant mortality of both instar larvae was observed. At the endpoint of the experiments (96 h), 75.2–90% of second and 80–85% of fourth instar larvae had already died, as a result of feeding on leaves treated with the highest concentration of the insecticides. Furthermore, based on Probit analysis, Matrine® exhibited the highest efficiency (lethal concentration LC50 = 2.87 μL·L–1) on 2nd instar larvae and followed by Bio1® (8.07 μL·L–1), chlorfluazuron (173.3 μL·L–1) and Bt (326.3 mg·L–1). The LC50 of Matrine® and Bt for 4th instar larvae were 1.75 μL·L–1 and 335.8 mg·L–1, respectively. Our study revealed that Matrine® and chromafenozide could be alternatively used against BTM in situations where there is a permission and need to use insecticides.

A detailed effect of continuous exposure of Cd on an important pest of crops like Helicoverpa armigera is lacking in the current literature. The cadmium was provisioned at 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg/kg in the artificial diet and fed to newly hatched larvae for at least three subsequent generations. The total developmental period and fecundity were severely affected with no larval hatching in treated insects. Total haemocyte count and differential haemocyte count (i.e., granulocytes and plasmatocytes) were decreased significantly compared to controls in treated insects. The antioxidant system (i.e., catalase, glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase), and the two detoxifying agents glutathione‐s‐transferase showed increased activity compared to controls. The results of the acetylcholinesterase assay showed a decrease in activity. Increased rate of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, uric acid and decreased rate of alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase in the first generation but showing an increasing trend in next two generations. The acid phosphatase activity was increased in the first two generations but significantly reduced in the third generation. The discrepancy in all physiological activities corresponded with the histological study of midgut infrastructure. It is inferred from the obtained results that cadmium continuous exposure affects every system of any organism that may perform irreparable damages.

Traditional pesticide formulations have some shortcomings, including limited efficacy and the usage of huge amounts of insecticide, which has a negative impact on the environment. Using nano‐pesticide formulations reduces the amount of pesticide applied, minimizing pest control expenses and environmental contamination. As a result, this study was conducted to develop a microemulsion formulation containing emamectin benzoate or beta‐cyfluthrin with improved morphology, droplet size, emulsion stability, and persistence of foam. Moreover to assess the efficacy of the developed microemulsion in comparison to the convention alone against the Egyptian cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) under both laboratory and field conditions. The results showed that the optimum conditions for emamectin benzoate microemulsion was 2% active ingredient, 5% (w/w) ethyl acetate, and DMF (3:2), 3.5% (w/w) Geronol ff4 and Etocas 35 (6:1), 5% (w/w) ethanol, and 86.5% (w/w) water, while for beta‐cyfluthrin, a 5.0% active ingredient, 15% (w/w) Solvesso 100 and ethyl acetate (2:1), 7.0% (w/w) Geronol ff4 and Etocas 35 (6:1), 10% (w/w) ethanol, and 68% (w/w) water. Under laboratory conditions, emamectin benzoate was more toxic than beta‐cyfluthrin to Spodoptera littoralis second and fourth instar larvae. Emamectin benzoate was more effective that beta‐cyfluthrin against Spodoptera littoralis in the field, whether as a microemulsion or a commercial product. Thus, microemulsions of tested insecticides with better formulation qualities may be more effective than traditional ones in controlling cotton leaf worm.
