Efficacy and Safety of Intravitreal Dexamethasone Implant in Patients with Diabetic Macular Edema

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal implant of dexamethasone (Ozurdex®) in diabetic macular edema (DME). Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter noncomparative study. Seventy-eight patients with DME followed for at least 6 months were included (P1.5 Network). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), intraocular pressure (IOP) and cataract progression were studied at baseline and then at 1, 2, 4 and 6 months. Results: The mean CRT decrease from baselin… Show more

“…The authors report a significant improvement in the best corrected visual acuity, with a mean gain of at least 13 letters during the follow-up period and similar positive results on central retinal thickness. These results are better than those reported in our study [2] and many previous studies [3,4,5]. We think that these differences could be due to the baseline characteristics of the patient population, which could have influenced the investigation in the context of patient responses as well as of outcome measures.…”

“…We have read the comments of Aknin et al [1] on our article entitled ‘Efficacy and safety of intravitreal dexamethasone implant in patients with diabetic macular edema' [2] with great interest. Aknin et al [1] present a long-term follow-up study of patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) treated with Ozurdex®.…”

“…We therefore read with interest the articles by Guigou et al [2] and Escobar-Barranco et al [3] who report improvements in VA and CRT after a limited number of doses and with a good safety profile. We would like to report the results from a similar longitudinal study we conducted among 29 patients with persistent DME who were enrolled at The Oxford Clinic in Cannes, France, between July 2010 and January 2011.…”

“…45 Guigou et al carried out another similar 6-month retrospective multicentre noncomparative study of 78 patients with DMO (78 eyes). 47 BCVA, CMT, IOP and cataract progression were studied at baseline, 1, 2, 4 and 6 months.…”
