Efficacy and Safety of Moxibustion for Postherpetic Neuralgia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is one of the most common complications of herpes zoster (HZ), and there is still a lack of effective therapies. An increasing number of studies have found that compared to traditional therapy, moxibustion treatment is beneficial for the treatment of PHN, although current evidence remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion for PHN.Methods: We conducted a b… Show more

“…36 Recently, a systematic review and meta-analysis have shown that moxibustion can alleviate postherpetic neuralgia to some extent, which highlights the great potential of moxibustion therapy. 37 This review provides a new perspective on interventions for herpes zoster.…”

“…A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in reducing pain intensity in patients with PHN. 12,13 Moreover, moxibustion has been reported to have fewer side effects compared to pharmacological interventions, making it an attractive option for patients who are unable to tolerate the side effects of conventional pain medications or who are seeking a non-pharmacological approach to pain management. 13 Bibliometrics is the field that involves the measurement and statistical analysis of scientific publications, reports, books, and other…”

“…Studies have shown that acupuncture can modulate the neuroendocrine and immune systems, leading to the release of endorphins and other neuromodulatory substances that have analgesic and anti‐inflammatory effects. A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in reducing pain intensity in patients with PHN 12,13 . “…Nevertheless, another systematic review showed that the efficacy of acupuncture combined with cupping was significantly higher than that of conventional Western medicine therapies ( Zhou et al, 2021 ). A systematic review by Wu et al (2021) suggested that the efficacy of moxibustion was higher than that of control groups (pharmacological therapies, herbal medicine, or no treatment), despite the high heterogeneity of the included studies, and a systematic review by Pei et al (2019) suggested that acupuncture is comparable to the effects of Western medicines, but with no reported adverse effects. Therefore, evidence-based medical evidence supports the efficacy of acupuncture-related therapies on PHN.…”
