“…Repeated courses of I-HA appear to be an effective and safe treatment of K-OA. A 2018 systemic review examined patients treated with recurrent courses of I-HA for up to 25 months and found that the most common side effect of repeated I-HA was joint swelling and arthralgia [54]. HA preparations of various molecular weights are available in North America, and most meta-analysis and systemic reviews lump the various HA preparations together when analyzing the data.…”

“…The AAOS CPG and coverage decisions do not acknowledge the recently reported economic and medical benefits associated with viscosupplementation (IA HA) use, including (1) delayed time to knee replacement 7 - 9 , (2) reduced pain medication usage (corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], and opioids) 10 , (3) better cost-effectiveness compared with standard-of-care treatments 11 , (4) improved function 9 , and (5) a favorable safety profile 12 - 14 .…”

“…Note that Ch, Ga and HA were chosen for supplementation therapy; and a probability of their specific e.g. anti-inflammatory action 75 or "inhibition of chondrodegenerative enzymes" 76 would be a priori be the same as for substances taken at random.…”
