Efficacy of a Jellyfish Sting Inhibitor in Preventing Jellyfish Stings in Normal Volunteers☆☆☆

Abstract: The jellyfish sting inhibitor prevented sting symptoms of C. fuscescens jellyfish in 10 of 12 subjects and diminished the pain of the jellyfish sting in the remaining 2 subjects. The jellyfish sting inhibitor also inhibited the more severe sting of the C. quadrumanus jellyfish in the majority of subjects. The jellyfish sting inhibitor does not eliminate the sting from C. fuscescens or C. quadrumanus jellyfish but significantly reduces the frequency and severity of stings.

“…Currently, lotions based on the protective mucus of clown fish (genus Amphiprion are commercially available in some countries and has proved to be effective in preventing accidents caused for some species of jellyfish, as Chryosaora fuscescens and Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, among others 2,11 . Therefore, it may be possible that the lotion also may be protective against SBE 11 .…”

“…If stinger nets are used, they should be of less than 0.25 mm mesh size to provide enough preservation against small jellyfish (eg, Irukandji) tentacles [117]. Sufficient application of a topical sting inhibitor such as Safe Sea lotion (a waterproof sunscreen containing octyl methoxycinnamate and zinc oxide that has been expressed to mimic the mucous coating used by clown fish to inhibit sea anemones stings) will also be helpful for swimmers at high risk of exposure to jellyfish as it has been established to significantly decrease the frequency and severity of stings [29,118]. Thick layers of petroleumbased ointment are noticed to be effective as well [61] Moreover, it is most important to avoid touching jellyfishes or their parts on the beaches because they often contain nematocysts that can discharge and sting [119].…”

“…En nyhet som har kommet de siste årene er solkremer med brennmanetbeskyttelse. De vil kunne hindre aktivering av de giftoverfø-rende neslecellene i brennmanetenes tentakler/tråder hvis man skulle komme i kontakt med disse (3,4).…”
