Efficacy of abamectin against ectoparasites of cattle

Abstract: Four trials, using 48 European breed cattle, were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of abamectin against the louse species Linognathus vituli, Haematopinus eurysternus and Damalinia bovis and against the mange mites Sarcoptes scabiei var bovis and Psoroptes ovis. Animals were allocated by restricted randomisation based on parasite counts to treatment with abamectin at a dose of 200 micrograms/kg given subcutaneously or to an untreated control group. Ectoparasites were counted before treatment and at weekly in… Show more

“…The Ivomec SR Bolus treatment of cattle with Psoroptes mange resulted in an improved growth rate. Similar results have been reported in cattle infested with P. ovis and treated with injectable ivermectin (Amaral et al 1983) and abamectin (Heinze-Mutz et al 1993). >127 >50* 10** <1** <1** <1** 0** 0** 0** 0** Control 2 c ± ± ± ± ± ± ± ± ± >330 >518 * P<0.05; **P<0.01 a Infested before treatment b Infested before treatment and on day 55 c Infested on day 55 …”

“…Abamectin is a mixture of avermectins containing >80% avermectin B1a and <20% avermectin B1b (Meister 1992). Abamectin exhibited immense efficiency in the control of ectoparasites infesting cattle in Germany (Heinze-Mutz et al 1993), in addition to extraordinary activity against insect and mite pests of a worldwide range of agronomic, vegetable, and ornamental crops (Yee et al 2001;Kumar and Poehling 2007;Kavallieratos et al 2009;Civolani et al 2010).…”

“…When the yaks were treated in October, all of the first instars would die. Ivermectin is effective for elimination of the warble fly [1,4,8,[10][11][12][13][14] but can cause side effects to the animals treated [7,9]. Abuse of such chemicals possibly impairs human health and also increase drug resistance of the warble fly [15]; and further produces environmental pollution [5].…”
