Efficacy of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Essential Hypertension: An Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Abstract: Background. Acupuncture is widely used in the clinical treatment of essential hypertension (EH). This overview is aimed at summarizing current systematic reviews of acupuncture for EH and assessing the methodological bias and quality of evidence. Methods. Two researchers searched and extracted 7 databases for systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) and independently assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias, reporting quality, and quality of evidence of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included… Show more

“…The reporting quality of included SRs was assessed using the updated PRISMA checklist (Page et al, 2020). Complete reporting in each item in the PRISMA-2020 checklist was scored as “Yes” and counted as 1 point, incomplete reporting in items or sub items was scored as “Partially yes” and counted as 0.5 points, and no reporting as “No” and 0 points [ 5 , 28 ]. The possible total scores of the PRISMA checklist are 27 points, with a score of 22 to 27 points indicating high reporting quality, 15 to 21.5 points indicating moderate reporting quality, and 0 to 14.5 points indicating low reporting quality [ 28 ].…”

“…In one study, 2 researchers searched and extracted 7 databases for systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs), and independently assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias, reporting quality, and quality of evidence of RCTs included in the SRs/MAs. 22 This overview included 14 SRs/MAs that use quantitative calculations to comprehensively assess the various effects of acupuncture in EH interventions. The methodological quality, reporting quality, risk of bias, and quality of evidence for outcome measures of SRs/MAs were all unsatisfactory.…”

“…Acupuncture regulates blood pressure through its impact on the CNS, the modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the rebalancing of the immune system, the improvement of the vascular structure, and the reduction of oxidative stress. Acupuncture is considered a safer and more effective approach to the management of hypertension [48].…”
