Efficacy of an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar against fleas and ticks on cats

Abstract: BackgroundThe objectives of the studies listed here were to ascertain the therapeutic and sustained efficacy of 10% imidacloprid (w/w) and 4.5% flumethrin (w/w) incorporated in a slow-release matrix collar, against laboratory-infestations of fleas and ticks on cats. Efficacy was evaluated against the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis, and the ticks Ixodes ricinus, Amblyomma americanum and Rhipicephalus turanicus. The number of studies was so large that only a general overview can be presented in this abstract.M… Show more

“…Speed of kill efficacy 6 h after infestation was also 100 % over the same period of time in two of the studies in which this attribute was tested (Stanneck et al 2012a). The speed of kill as well as repellent and acaricidal efficacy now recorded against weekly infestations of adult I. ricinus over a period of 4 weeks, are in agreement with those of the previous studies, as no ticks, dead or alive, were detected on the treated cats at any of the measured time points and assessment days.…”

“…In three previous studies the imidacloprid/flumethrin collars proved to be 100 % effective against laboratory-induced infestations of adult I. ricinus on domestic cats on Day 7 post-treatment and thereafter against re-infestation at 4-weekly intervals from Day 28 until 8 months later (Stanneck et al 2012a). Speed of kill efficacy 6 h after infestation was also 100 % over the same period of time in two of the studies in which this attribute was tested (Stanneck et al 2012a).…”

“…It has been shown to achieve long-term persistent efficacy of 8 months against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) (Stanneck et al 2012b(Stanneck et al , 2012c) and 4 months against I. holocyclus on dogs (Smith et al 2013). The Seresto ® collar has also been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of trans mission of VBD from ticks to dogs (Dantas-Torres et al 2013).…”

“…The IVP is registered for use on dogs and cats in many countries including in the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and New Zealand. It has been shown to be efficacious for 8 months against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) and ticks (Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor reticulatus, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes scapularis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus turanicus) on dogs and cats and additionally eliminates lice (Trichodectes canis) and mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) on dogs (Stanneck et al 2012b;Stanneck et al 2012c). Both of the active ingredients in the IVP are found in ectoparasiticides currently registered for use on dogs in Australia.…”
