The efficacy of CO2 and N2 gases alone or in a mixture was tested against eggs, larvae, and pupae of the almond moth, Cadra cautella, a major date fruit pest, under temperature regimes of 5°C and 25°C. Our results indicated that exposing different stages to higher concentrations of CO2 significantly affected egg hatchability, larval mortality, and pupal mortality as compared to 100% N2 gas, at both temperature regimes. Application of CO2 at lower doses (below 50%) did not give 100% mortality of any developmental stage even at longer exposure timings. However, treatments at higher doses (75 and 100% CO2) were effective at 24 h and longer treatment duration. The application of 100% N2 did not effectively control C. cautella. Of all the stages, the larvae of C. cautella were most susceptible to the gases. Our results indicated that temperature has a significant effect on the efficacy of gases or their combinations tested after an exposure of 48 h and longer. Based on current findings, we conclude that CO2 gas is a good candidate for successful control of C. cautella immature stages under storage conditions and can be a potential alternative to highly toxic methyl bromide.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of UV‐C radiation in controlling the maize weevils (S. zeamais Motschulsky) in stored maize. The maize and insects (adult and immature stages) were simultaneously irradiated with UV‐C dose of 10 J/cm2. UV‐C radiation can be used as control of adult weevils because it presented a lower number of live adult weevils (33.6 counts), reduction in the loss of grain mass (15 g), and fewer damaged grains (12.9%), however, not affect the control of the immature stages. The carotenoid content of maize grains was reduced after UV‐C treatment and storage. Electrical conductivity was highest in treatment without UV‐C in adult weevils owing to the higher number of insects. UV‐C radiation in pre‐storage was effective only in the control of adults; however, it is a technology free of chemical residues, allowing the processing of the grains at any time of storage. Practical applications Ultraviolet (UV‐C) radiation is widely used in food disinfection. This technology is free of residues, low‐cost, and easy‐to‐use, but still little used in grain postharvest. Inhibition of weevil population growth is observed when UV‐C radiation is applied to maize containing adult stages of the weevil. In addition, minor changes in maize quality are verified. The knowledge generated by this work can be used by industries and suppliers as an alternative to conventional pest controls.

Grains (cereals and legumes) are universal foods that provide calories, proteins, essential minerals and vitamins. They are essential to the nutrition of many including infants and children. Attack by insects and microorganisms, particularly fungi, during drying, storage and processing, affects the quality, safety and market value of grains. Fungal attacks before or during drying can be disastrous, the effect can persist throughout the supply chain. Postharvest grain losses pose challenges to food and nutritional security, public health, and many developing nations' economy. Postharvest storage structures and packaging materials are expected to extend the shelf life of the grains by protecting them from insects, microorganisms, environmental factors and making the microenvironment unfavorable for insect and microbial activities. Traditional storage and packaging materials are highly inefficient in this sense and are associated with quality degradation. Traditional storage and packaging materials commonly used by farmers, mostly in developing countries, include granary, crib, wooden box, gunny bag and polypropylene woven bag. Modern storage and packaging materials commonly used are metal silo and hermetic bags; they are effective but unfortunately cannot be afforded by most farmers in developing countries. The article reviewed postharvest storage management of cereals and legumes. Literature was gathered through a comprehensive literature review. The use of various traditional storage and packaging materials for grains was debated. Techniques for the prevention of postharvest losses were extensively discussed, emphasis was given to novel technology and the use of natural insecticides. Challenges associated with controlling postharvest losses were also summarised. In the end, research gaps were identified and recommendations were provided about minimizing grain contamination and postharvest losses.
