Efficacy of Autologous Melanocyte Transplantation on Amniotic Membrane in Patients With Stable Leukoderma

Abstract: Vitiligo is a disfiguring disease with no definitive treatment options that significantly affects patients' quality of life. We aimed to compare, for what we believe to be the first time, the repigmentation efficacy of cultured epidermal cell suspension (CES) and amniotic membrane (AM)-cultured epidermal cell grafting (CEG) in the treatment of stable vitiligo. (December 15, 2010, to June 5, 2013, randomized, double-blind, intraindividually placebo-controlled clinical trial with a 6-month posttreatment follow-u… Show more

“…On extensive literature search, we found only two double‐blind studies which evaluated cellular techniques in vitiligo surgery . Since ours is a split body double‐blind randomized controlled study, the chance of bias, and confounding factors is minimal.…”

“…This strategy is shown to be more effective than the routine therapeutic procedures such as surgery and cell-based therapies. Various ECM components of the AM's matrix such as collagen type IV and VII, laminins type 1 and type 5 have the main role in proliferation and adhesion of melanocytes [72,73]. Moreover, the AM has been successfully utilized in the regeneration of non-healing wounds in patients who suffer from epidermolysis bullosa.…”

“…Moreover, other studies reporting the incidence of skin cancer in the general population had low representation of AA. 4 To our knowledge, how frequently AA patients are biopsied and the reason for the biopsy have not been performed. Having such information is important because it helps to inform the types of skin conditions for which AA are biopsied.…”
