Efficacy of bandage contact lens for the management of dry eye disease after cataract surgery

Abstract: Purpose We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of bandage contact lens (BCL) for the management of dry eye disease (DED) after cataract surgery. Methods A total of 120 patients (140 eyes) with age-related cataract and DED were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent standard micro-incision phacoemulsification surgeries and were divided into control or BCL groups. Slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination, Ocular Surface Disease Index, keratograph analysis and Sch… Show more

“…[23] Additionally, complicated cataract or/and IOL surgery takes a longer time, and tissue trauma is larger, which promotes a more serious in ammatory reaction. [9] Some researchers have implicated that in ammation is closely related to the aggravation of DED. [24] Dan-Na Shi et al [11] have reported the safety of therapeutic BCLs on post-cataract surgery patients.…”

“…Similarly, subjective evaluation scores, tear film break-up time, and fluorescein staining improved at week 1 (P¼0.031, P¼0.021, and P¼0.03, respectively) and day 14 (P¼0.009, P¼0.021, and P¼0.032, respectively) in the BCL eye compared with the untreated eye. 14 Lipid tear dysfunction (NIf-BUT; P¼0.008), bulbar redness (P¼0.047), and Schirmer I test score (P¼0.013) showed significant improvement with BCL at 1 month after surgery with reduced inflammation, 57 whereas the tear break-up time (P,0.001) and corneal fluorescein score (P¼0.004) improved rap-idly in eyes with BCL compared with those with eye pads 3 months after surgery. 10 Patient satisfaction scores were higher in the BCL group compared with the eyepatch group (8.3861.59 vs 7.6361.75; P¼0.213), 58 whereas lower corneal fluorescein staining scores (P,0.05) were observed 3 days after surgery with BCL.…”

“…However, various methods can only reduce but not completely eliminate the symptoms of DED. Artificial tears ( 87 ), silicone eye shields ( 88 ), gas lenses ( 89 ) and corneal contact lenses ( 90 ) are the basic treatment for DED, but in moderate-to-severe DED with ocular surface inflammation, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive treatments are essential ( Table 2 ) ( 128 ).…”
