“…Unilateral nephrectomy is, how ever, also known to make rats susceptible to DOCA-NaCl treatment [4], and malignant course of such l-kidney-DOCA-NaCl hypertension has been reported using similar dosage of DOCA as used in our experiments [13], Thus, sensitivity of Heymann nephritic rats to DOCA-NaCl treatment may be due to reduction of functioning renal mass in general, without any specific connection with ne phritis itself. Indeed, a similar degree of hypertension as in Heymann nephritis-DOCA-NaCl hypertensive rats could be induced with DOCA-NaCl treatment in unilaterally nephrectomized rats [14], The pathogenesis of this "classi cal' 1-kidney-DOCA-NaCI hypertension, however, ap peared to be at least partly different from that of Heymann nephritis-DOCA-NaCl hypertension, because captopril treatment prevented the development of nephritis-DOCANaCI hypertension but was ineffective in 1-kidney-DOCANaCl hypertension [14], Moreover, we have observed that chronic N.N'-diacetyl-benzidine-induced nephropathy [15] does not sensitize to DOCA-NaCl treatment despite ap parently similar severity of proteinuria and nephrosis as in Heymann nephritic rats [ 16], Thus, aggravation of DOCA-NaCl hypertension by Heymann nephritis may reflect more specific renal changes than simply a reduction of renal mass.…”
