Efficacy of coastal reservoirs to address India’s water shortage by impounding excess river flood waters near the coast

Abstract: India is a sub-continent where presently 320 million people remain in the water-starved parts of the country and according to the UN, this number is expected to increase to 840 million in the year 2050. There is a severe demand-supply mismatch. Though there has been no significant change in India's rainfall pattern, the number of areas under drought in India is increasing every year. Increase in population is one of the reasons for water scarcity but the inefficient management of the received precipitation sta… Show more

“…Wilayah yang letak geografisnya terletak di dataran rendah sering mendapatkan masalah pada saat musim hujan akibat luapan air sungai yang tidak terbendung. Semua air dari sungai atau danau akan mengalir melewati daerah yang berbeda-beda sebelum bergabung dengan laut [1,2]. Tidak hanya itu, pada saat berlangsung musim kemarau maka wilayah yang intensitas curah hujannya sedikit akan mengalami kekeringan.…”

“…Despite the region receiving a lot of rain from July to September of every year certain areas lack access to clean drinking water, while other areas of the region get excessive rain that causes ooding (Sitharam et al, 2017). Demand supply imbalance resulting from this geographical and seasonal variation in the natural water supply and the year round demand for irrigation, drinking, and industrial water gets worse as the population grows (Sitharam, 2017). Water pollution may also be the cause of a water shortage in places with abundant water resources.…”

“…There is no complex navigation obstruction problem. Coastal reservoirs are efficient ways to use to marine resources (Gu et al ., 2019; Sitharam, 2017; Yang, 2015; Yang, Smith, and Sivakumar, 2017; Zhang et al ., 2020). Coastal reservoirs can be roughly divided into four types: river mouth reservoirs, estuarine reservoirs, tidal flat reservoirs, and island reservoirs (Zhang et al ., 2020).…”
