Efficacy of Different Sex Pheromone Traps for Monitoring and Control of Pink Bollworm {Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) Gelechlidae: Lepidoptera}

Abstract: Five trap designs yellow and white funnel, Delta red and white and universal were evaluated for their catching efficiency. Yellow funnel was most efficient for catching male moths followed by white funnel and then Deltas red and white. Universal trap was most inefficient. In the field where no plant protection was given against bollworms and mass trapping was done, pink bollworm infestation in the bolls was much less as compared with untreated check (control). In area where insecticides were compared with mass… Show more

“…The delta and light traps were also found to have a significant reduction in the PBW population, well but less significant than the Sex pheromone traps. These findings were in line with those of Attique et al (2000), who assessed the effectiveness of five different trap design, viz., yellow funnel, delta red and white, universal, and yellow and white funnel traps, against the pink bollworm. He found that all traps significantly decreased the pest population, but the yellow funnel trap was determined to be the most effective of all the traps.…”

“…But the results are in agreement with Shrinivas et al [9] who reported that sleeve trap was superior over the delta sticky trap. Attique et al [10], also reported that yellow funnel trap was best among yellow and white funnel, red and white delta traps and universal trap for catching efficiency against pink bollworm. The sleeve trap consists of a long polythene sack bag to seize the male moths that are attracted towards the pheromone source and they can hold huge number of moths and there will be no chance to escape for male moths from sleeve bag which is the reason for more efficiency of sleeve trap over the delta sticky trap was that,.…”

“…The use of insecticides to control the pink bollworm has developed resistance in insect pests all over the world including Pakistan (Ahmad et al, 2006). Cotton is the host of different insect pest species from the seedling to harvesting stage (Attique et al, 2000). The insect pest species associated with cotton crop are 93 in Pakistan (Yunus and Yusuf, 1979).…”
