Efficacy of Electronic Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation

Abstract: There is limited evidence for the effectiveness of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation; however, there may be a place in therapy to help modify smoking habits or reduce the number of cigarettes smoked. Studies available provided different administration patterns such as use while smoking, instead of smoking, or as needed. Short-term studies reviewed were small and did not necessarily evaluate cessation with a focus on parameters associated with cessation withdrawal symptoms. Though long-term safety is unknown, c… Show more

“…We were not able to determine if substitution of e-cigarettes for tobacco cigarettes played a direct role in the reduced number of cigarettes smoked per day among smokers and in the overall reduced smoking rates reported from 2008 to 2014. Studies show that e-cigarette use as a cessation strategy among smokers is on the rise [29] though the efficacy of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation is unclear as is their long-term safety [30]. …”

“…nicotine patch/gum, bupropion SR, and varenicline are approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. This however, is not the case for e-cigarettes (despite the popular belief) since the rather scarce and quite contradictory scientific evidences do not presently justify their use as smoking cessation tools (Orr and Asal, 2014). …”
