“…Currently, only two drugs are available for CD treatment: benznidazole (BZ) and nifurtimox (NFX). Unfortunately, these drugs carry high toxicity and cause severe side effects that often interrupt treatment [43]. Therefore, there is a need for new therapeutic alternatives for CD that are more effective and less toxic for both acute and chronic phases.…”

“…In addition, the animals treated with BZ and BZ + Sa EO presented lower patency periods compared with animals treated only with Sa EO, as well as lower positivity of blood cultures compared with the untreated control group. With respect to cure rates, Sa EO showed 12.5% (1/8), BZ showed 25.0% (1/4), and BZ + Sa EO showed 37.5% (3/8), considered a very interesting result [43].…”

“…In order to evaluate the efficacy of the different treatments, an animal that presented negative results for all tests (FBE, BC, cPCR and qPCR) before and after immunosuppression with Cy, was considered cured [21,28]. An animal that presented a positive result in any of these tests was considered as therapeutic failure.…”

“…The EOs of S. aromaticum and of Z. officinale, administered alone, have previously presented anti-T cruzi activity greater than that of BZ in mice orally inoculated with metacyclic trypomastigotes obtained from a culture of Y strain (TcII) [21]. The treatment using the combination of BZ and S. aromaticum EO in mice orally inoculated with metacyclic trypomastigotes of the AM14 strain (TcIV) obtained from the insect vector, also promoted benefits for the treated animals [28]. Together, these results justify the continuation of studies regarding EOs, alone or in combination, using trypomastigotes of different origins (blood, insect or culture) and other strains of T. cruzi in the infection of the animals.…”

“…Zanusso Júnior et al (2018) [ 39 ] investigated the activity of the EO of Syzygium aromaticum (main compounds are eugenol and β-caryophyllene) alone and in association with benznidazole (BZ) in mice infected with T. cruzi AM14 strain (TcIV) (considered resistant to BZ in vivo ). When compared to untreated animals, experiments with the EO of S. aromaticum alone promoted a reduction of the parasitemia.…”
