Efficacy of Fasting in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Narrative Review

Abstract: Over the last decade, studies suggested that dietary behavior modification, including fasting, can improve metabolic and cardiovascular markers as well as body composition. Given the increasing prevalence of people with type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the increasing obesity (also in combination with diabetes), nutritional therapies are gaining importance, besides pharmaceutical interventions. Fasting has demonstrated beneficial effects for both healthy individuals and those with metabolic… Show more

“… 415 , 416 IF is an effective strategy for controlling weight and increasing insulin sensitivity in patients with diabetes and can also improve cardiometabolic outcomes. 417 , 418 The every-other-day fasting (EODF) regimen selectively stimulates beige fat development within white adipose tissue and shifts the gut microbiota composition in experimental models, explaining the mechanism through which IF ameliorates obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis. 419 KD has therapeutic effects on glycemia, lipid control, and weight reduction in T2DM patients.…”

“…Persistently high blood glucose levels, known as hyperglycemia, are the main features of diabetes 1 . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of diabetics was 171 million in 2000 and is estimated to reach 366 million by 2030 2 .…”

“…It has been speculated that IF could provide auxiliary support for individuals with T1D by reducing the need for exogenous insulin. A review of prior studies suggests that fasting in T1D has potential beneficial outcomes when adjustments to insulin are properly managed to support glycemic control 20 . In summary, IF has been proven effective in clinical and pre-clinical settings to counteract metabolic dysfunction observed in T2D and islet dysfunction.…”
