Efficacy of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and crude pituitary extract of fish and frog in oocyte maturation and ovulation in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822 and Clarias anguillaris L., 1762

Abstract: Abstract. The African catfish, Clarias gariepinus Burchell and Clarias anguillaris L., were induced to ovulate in aquaria by the administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and pituitary extracts of Clarias albopunctatus (Nichols & Lamonte) and frog, Rana elegans. For final maturation and ovulation in both species of Clarias, the total dosage of each hormone was inversely proportional to the initial oocyte diameters of the recipient females. The time of ovulation after the last injection (latent peri… Show more

“…It is also worth noting that in spite of numerous studies on the ovulation stimulation in this species with various preparations (Hogendoorn, 1979;De Leeuw et al, 1985;Richter et al, 1985;Richter et al, 1987a,b;Goos et al, 1987;Kouřil et al, 1992;Inyang and Heiarachchi, 1994;Brzuska, 2002) none of them is used in practice on a larger scale. Hence it seems that further studies on ovulation stimulation with Ovopel can be recommended.…”

“…Although pituitary extracts from non-piscine sources have also induced spawning in clariid catfishes C. anguillaris, C. gariepinus, C. isheriensis, H. longi$lis (Fagbenro et al 1992;Nwadukwe 1993;Inyang and Hettiarachchi 1994;Salami et al 1994) in Nigeria, the standardization of methods, dosages and concentrations of hormones are often inadequate. It is generally more efficient to induce ovulation in fishes with a pituitary gland extract or a gonadotropin from a teleostean source because of the phylogenetic closeness between the donor and recipient (Lam 1982).…”
