Efficacy of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the Management of Malignant Ascites

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the difference of clinical efficacy between conventional intraperitoneal chemotherapy and HIPEC, so as to explore the clinical application value and advantages of HIPEC. Design: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 80 patients with malignant ascites admitted to our hospital from June 2017 to June 2019. The general clinical data and qualitative data of the treatment results of 80 patients with malignant ascites were processed by SPSS19.0 using χ2 test and … Show more

“…First the infusion uid can mechanically remove abdominal isolated cancer cells. Then during the process, chemotherapeutic drugs are infused into the abdominal cavity, so as to form a circumstance of high and durable concentration in the peritoneal cavity [12]. There is a natural peritonealplasma barrier (PPB) in our body, which limits the resorption of drugs from the peritoneal cavity into the blood [13].…”

“…Intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion has many advantages such as simple operating equipment, constant temperature, non-invasive infusion of medication, small difference between outer and inner body temperature, easy to control, no risk of burns and mild side effects. Its short-term effect is acceptable, and it can significantly prolong survival time and reduce the sufferings of patients; thus, these have promising prospects for clinical application [21][22][23].…”

“…The prognosis of MPM patients is extremely poor. Indeed, abdominal complications due to systemic metastasis or intestinal dystrophy cause death in many cases; left untreated, the life expectancy of patients is less than 1 year, and there is currently no consensus on the treatment of this malignancy, although multiple studies have utilized intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPE) in combination with intravenous chemotherapy or cytoreductive surgery (CRS) [10][11][12][13][14]. Therefore, prolonging survival time in MPM patients and identifying the associated prognostic factors are difficult problems for researchers.…”
